Senior Legal Counsel

This NSW government organisation are responsible for the maintenance and development of a significant portfolio of public assets including a range of entertainment premises and public spaces. This portfolio creates an active, vibrant and sustainable environment within the local community. Hosting major events and concerts, and having leisure, education, hospitality, and retail facilities. The organisation is responsible for the day-to-day management as well as the strategic development of this area. With over $2 billion in development projects, over 10 million stakeholders engaged each year and with significant growth plans in place across the next 12 years this is an incredibly exciting project team to be part of.
Your new role
You will be the principal lawyer of this entity providing a wide range of commercial advice, on a number of areas including commercial management, property development, contracts, planning and government administration. This role is a 3 month fixed term contract with the potential to be taken on permanently. You will be responsible for the legal and risk function, including oversight of governance, statutory and the audit program. You will provide expert legal advice to executives ensuring accurate drafting, review, negotiation and interpretation of various commercial and operational agreements (particularly in relation to financial, legal and legacy commitments). You will also be the legal adviser to the organisation’s business units to facilitate their commercial objectives and protect their interests. You will be required to draft and approve complex contracts, applying expertise in contract law and seeking external specialist legal advice when needed. You will interpret the intent of all contract conditions and often mediate disputes. You will interpret and apply statutory and common law obligations and ensure these are effectively embedded into relevant contracts.
What you'll need to succeed
You will be an experienced commercial lawyer with at least 7 years of post-admission experience. You will have proven commercial and contract interpretation expertise, with a track record of delivering timely, meaningful and reliable legal/contractual information to inform senior management. You will have proven experience with all the functions listed above in a similar local government environment or top tier law firm.
