Client Details

Road Smart is a new VicRoads road safety education and training program for Year 10 or equivalent students which aims to build the knowledge, skills and behaviours for safe driving among young people.

Young and inexperienced drivers face the greatest risk on our roads. Road crashes continue to be one of the leading causes of death for people aged 18 to 25 years.

Laying the foundations for safe road use through evidence-based road safety education will contribute to reducing road trauma among young people.

A brand new curriculum informed by the latest research in young driver education has been purposely developed for the Road Smart program.

Road Smart is designed to provide beginner drivers, and their supervising drivers, with a broader understanding of:

  • The causes of road trauma, how the safe system works and the effect of kinetic energy in crashes
  • The Towards Zero vision and actions that can be undertaken within a safe system to prevent road trauma
  • How to develop strategies to reduce personal risk as road users
  • The Graduated Licensing System and the importance of a staged approach to learning to drive
  • Developing an effective partnership between the supervising driver and learner throughout the learning process
  • The rationale underlying important safety related requirements and responsibilities
  • The importance of vehicle safety for young drivers.
