The Financial Planning and Resourcing Division is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and committed Senior Budget Officer to join their team in the Budget Management and Analysis branch.

The Senior Budget Officer maintains systems and controls to support budget allocations, budget reviews, management reporting and the cash-flow management of the Department`s corporate budget. The Senior Budget Officer prepares reviews and maintains accurate current budget and forward estimates and cash-flow estimates on an ongoing basis.

The Senior Budget Officer liaises with stakeholders in the development, maintenance and reporting on budget performance and estimate. The successful applicant will develop and maintain effective communication links and working relationships to ensure access to diverse specialist knowledge.

The Budget Management and Analysis Branch is part of the Financial Planning and Resourcing Division. The Branch is responsible for the management of the Department`s budget at a corporate level, management reporting, cash management, central and regional office budget management and advice as well as FTE reporting and assisting with capital works budget reporting.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for permanent appointments to other similar vacancies that occur throughout our branch for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  1. Well-developed skills and considerable experience in the provision of financial strategic advice to senior and executive level management.
  2. Well-developed skills and considerable experience in financial planning and resource management at a strategic and operational level with the ability to deliver quality and timely budgets and related financial management services.
  3. Well-developed knowledge and considerable experience in contemporary financial management, including budget preparation, review and reporting, in a large/complex organisation.
  4. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills to undertake consultation, collaboration, negotiation and build effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders on financial issues.
  5. Well-developed written communication skills including experience in contributing reports, briefing papers and responses to Senior Executive and/or Ministerial/Parliamentary requests.
  6. Well-developed skills and experience in achieving outcomes and delivering quality products and services consistent with customer needs and defined quality expectations, including timeliness.
  7. Well-developed analytical and conceptual skills to provide innovative solutions to complex problems.

Employees will be required to:

  • hold relevant tertiary qualification in business, commerce, finance or related field or equivalent substantial experience; and
  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before commencing employment


Employees will be required to:

  • Complete the Department`s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Department policy; and
  • Complete the Department`s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
