Technology & Innovation (T&I) are seeking suitable experienced applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Chief IT Risk Officer. This is an anticipated vacancy within the T&I Portfolio. 

Over nearly 40 years the AFP has developed a history of success by rising to challenges and quickly responding to new threats to Australia and Australians. The AFP has explored, and will continue to explore, both opportunities and challenges in the current and future global environment. We have undertaken significant work to reassess the way we do business and our transformation is underway. The new normal that we are striving for is a police agency focused more on the ability to prevent and disrupt crime before it occurs. We are developing the necessary skills and capabilities to realise this goal. We continue to invest in our future through the diversification of our workforce and the modernisation of our capabilities. This position is within the Technology and Innovation portfolio. The portfolio will deliver an organisation-wide ICT capability that provides agility in a digitally connected world.

As the Chief IT Risk Officer you will work with the CIO/National Manager and the Strategic Risk team. You will sit in the first line of defence, driving operational improvements in the Technology space to meet broader strategic initiatives and provide risk consultation and advisory services to executive leaders and key strategic programs. You will be accountable for the management of ICT risks, compliance and governance activities including the continuous improvement of existing frameworks.

Your success in risk mitigation strategies will help you to identify, develop, deliver and implement a risk management strategy incorporating operating structure, corporate plan, our ministerial directive and our applicable regulatory / compliance environment. Your analytics expertise will balance risk and compliance related requirements with budgetary and business goals.

Your experience in a complex regulatory operating environment will be leveraged to develop and enhance transparency, oversight and reporting, identify and manage risks and risk management activities, assessing controls/control environments, promoting legislative and regulatory compliance, and governance activities.

Your strong leadership capabilities will inspire a risk culture through facilitating workshops on risk initiatives. Your excellent interpersonal skills will enable you to provide risk advocacy to leaders, including the development and presentation of recommendations to the leadership team in a consultative and professional manner.

Skills & Experience
• Tertiary qualification, preferably in business, commerce, law, information and communication, technology or related discipline. Postgraduate studies or MBA preferred but not essential.
• Relevant industry qualifications

The AFP’s application process for non-policing vacancies consists of two-steps for non-AFP employees. (Existing AFP employees only need to undertake step 1 of the process).

Step 1 Application:

Step 2 AFP Employment Suitability Questionnaire (ESQ):

The ESQ is the tool in which applicant’s character is assessed against the employment character standards.

Following the instructions contained in the email from AFP Recruitment confirming receipt of your application, the ESQ must be completed and submitted within 14 calendar days after the closing date of the applications.                


Traffic History:

All applicants are required to obtain a copy of their Traffic History.  If you have resided in different states or territories, you must supply a traffic history from each state or territory.  You are required to include 10 years of traffic history and not older than 3 months from date of application. If you have a traffic history report from more than one state or territory, you will need to scan all documents and attach to your application as one.


Traffic history information is available from the local Motor Registry in your state or territory.   Do not upload individual infringement notices or unofficial documentation.


You are required to inform the Recruitment Team (afprecruitment@afp.gov.au) of any offences, infringements or police charges that occur during the recruitment process.
